Travertine is one of the most beautiful, unique and widely used natural stones. Travertine is formed when limestone is combined with hot springs and thousands of years. It is a form of limestone, and mainly consists of crystallized minerals and limestone.
Most of this amazing stone comes in light cream colours, however varying to lighter brown as well.
Its unique characteristics of colours, shades, finishes and sizes provide a warm, inviting effect both in homes and commercial situations. The uses are only limited by your imagination. Widely used in flooring, bench tops, vanity tops, bath tub surrounds, stair cases, feature walls, fireplace surrounds, pool areas as well as paving. Travertine also has a natural slip resistant feature.
Its comes in a few finishes and each one has its own advantages and unique looks:
Honed: Travertine surface is sanded, which results in a matte finish.
Polished: Involves both sanding and polishing the tile and provides a shiny and silky experience.
Brushed: Steel wire is used to brush the tile and offers a worn looking finish.
Tumbled: Travertine is tumbled with gravel which creates a aged looking experience.
Filled: selection of coloured resin is available in order to complete this process. This resin together with cement is applied to the stone surface which produces a solid, clean appearance.
Same as with most other stones, Travertine should be vacuumed, swept then cleaned with a neutral ph solution. Acid solutions should never be used as they can etch the stone. The cleaning methods and products used will also alter, depending wether the stone has been sealed or left in its natural state.
If the tiles have not been filled then naturally they will have small to medium holes on the surface which are the result of gases escaping as the Travertine is formed. Even though these holes show the amazing natural look of Travertine, they quite easily and quickly fill with dirt and dust. In most cases these tiny holes cannot be cleaned by hand and require professional treatment. Similar cases will occur with most other types of Travertine.
